This performance on American Bandstand was shot in black and white by the ABC network, just under two months from the show's permanent switch to color. Hosted by Dick Clark, American Bandstand is a one hour Saturday afternoon program favored by both adult and young audiences. This is The Doors first nationally televised performance, and pre-recorded filming takes place on Stage 55 of KABC Studios (ABC Television Center) in Los Angeles on July 12th, 1967. The episode then airs nationwide on July 22nd, and is also picked up by television networks in Canada. The Doors portion of the episode includes a performance of The Crystal Ship followed by a short on-stage interview with the band, then an encore of what is about to become their number one hit Light My Fire. Also appearing in this episode are The Bee Gees who perform their song New York Mining Disaster 1941, and Dick Clark conducts a customary interview with an American radio deejay.

On August 5th, 1967 American Bandstand celebrates its 10th anniversary with a special broadcast and continues the celebration with a follow-up episode on August 12th. In an interview with journalist Vernon Scott published in early September, Dick Clark is asked to pinpoint today's top teen idols, and without thinking responds with "The Monkees, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Beach Boys. And the next big group will be The Doors." On December 30th for the 1967 year end special, Light My Fire is voted the #1 song of 1967 by the American Bandstand dancers. Clean copies of this performance have survived and are given an official release on 2013's R-Evolution on Blu-ray and DVD.

INTERVIEW WITH DICK CLARK:

Clark: Gentlemen, wanna come down and join us for half a second? That's a beautiful song. Gentlemen... may I ask a favor, would you introduce yourself please?
Krieger: I'm Robby.
Densmore: John.
Morrison: My name is Jim Morrison.
Manzarek: Ray Manzarek.
Clark: Ray, let me start with you and a question if I may. How do you characterize your music, does it have a name?
Manzarek: Well it's impossible really to put a label on it, because of where we are in the music, being on the inside, you're only of the music, and all categories have to come from the outside, so someone else is going to have to say what our music is, rather than us because we are our music.
Clark: Now, a lot of people seem to think you come from San Francisco. Is that true?
Morrison: No, actually we got together in L.A. but we play in San Francisco a lot.
Clark: That's the explanation of why you have that association. Why is so much happening in San Francisco? You figured it out yet?
Morrison: Uh, the west is the best.
Clark: (chuckles) Alright, fair enough. (Clark turns to Robby and John)
Clark: You sold many, many albums before you sold a single record. It's a phenomenal record success all around, the album and the single. How long did it take to make that first album?
Densmore: About a month.
Clark: It's a relatively short amount of time in this day and age, isn't it?
Densmore: We're in the middle of our second album now, trying to top the first one.
Clark: You told me though, that it took about about a year to accumulate everything and put it all together.
Densmore: (nods)
Clark: Let me leap up here (to Robby), future plans - somebody mentioned you are going somewhere?
Krieger: Yea, we're gonna go to England and our new album should be out in about September.
Clark: Have you selected a name for the new album yet Jim?
Morrison: I think it's 'Strange Days'
Clark: Alright, fair enough. Why don't you make yourself comfortable up here, and we'll do the thing that set the whole music business on fire. Ladies and gentlemen, again, The Doors!
