Info:

In May of 1967, ABC picks up the Malibu U concept and regular feature from Teen magazine to be transformed into a half hour weekly television show. In a deal with Teen magazine proprietor Robert Petersen, seven episodes are to be aired coast-to-coast and in Canada on Fridays through the summer of 1967, with a premiere on July 21st.

Shot in color during the first few days of August and broadcast nationwide by ABC on August 25th 1967, The Doors appear as guest 'professors' with a lip sync'ed performance of Light My Fire shot on an antique fire engine parked at Leo Carrillo State Beach. Hosted by the 'Dean' of the mythical University, Rick Nelson and 'head of student body' Robie Porter, this episode also includes performances by Chad & Jeremy, Lou Christie, The Bob Banas Dancers, and Marvin Gaye. The hosts are accompanied by 'students', nicknamed Malibeauties, Cindy Bush, Patti Cubbison, Denny Howard, Kam Nelson (Rick Nelson's sister), Patti Wymer, and the show features a theme song of the same name recorded by Harpers Bizarre. After receiving poor ratings across the country, the show is permanently discontinued, with the final episode airing on September 1st.

On what is to be one day of filming for this episode, Jim Morrison is a no-show and is replaced by Robby Krieger's twin brother Ronny, who is working as a roadie with the band during this period. He is filmed with his back to the audience in an effort to hide his identity and appear as if he is Jim Morrison. Filming for Jim Morrison is rescheduled for another day, and the location is moved to the top of the 9000 Building in West Hollywood with the sky as a backdrop for the camera, so as not to reveal the fact that he was not with the rest of the band. For a special effect to accompany The Doors performance, a subsidiary scene is shot for the episode in which smoke appears to be billowing out from Patti Wymer's ears, and a red sweater is held up behind her for this filming to appear as though she is sitting on the red fire engine as shown in the final cut of the episode. The exact filming dates are currently unknown, however press photos, tour dates, and The Doors whereabouts indicate that all filming is completed during the first week of August.

In late 2013, The Doors release R-Evolution featuring the original color broadcast, plus a bonus feature of color outtakes from the filming atop the 9000 building (See Screenshots Below). While this modern release features the complete color performance, it does not include the intro contained in the black and white timecoded kinescope copies of this episode held by UCLA in its archives.
