The Doors lip sync their first single Break On Through on KTLA's one hour teen dance program SHEBANG, hosted by Casey Kasem. Partway through this performance, Jim Morrison's microphone is possibly turned on briefly as someone can be heard mumbling along with the first chorus, however the exact details of the technical glitch are currently unknown and Jim's microphone is likely never powered up or plugged in to a recording device. At the time of this broadcast, SHEBANG has recently returned to the air in a new night time version with its former producer Bob Barnett following heavy petitioning from viewers after having left in November 1966.

For years, this performance is thought to have been The Doors first ever appearance on television, however a newly discovered ticket for the performance has revealed the true recording date of this show - February 25th, 1967. This revelation marks this appearance on SHEBANG as The Doors second, with an appearance two weeks prior on Boss City taking precedence. Although the actual broadcast date of this performance is yet to be confirmed, this program normally airs on Mondays, and due to filming taking place on Saturdays, it is likely edited and readied for broadcast two days later on February 27th. The February 27th episode also features Marvin Gaye, Thee Midniters, and disc jockey Dave Hull of KRLA radio.

Reasons for the survival of this television performance along with many others of the era featured on this show such as Buffalo Springfield is likely due to a production feature known as the Shebang Scrapbook Of Stars in which performances are kept in an artist library for use in the weekly broadcasts. Very few complete episodes of the show are known to have survived. Although poor quality videotape copies circulated amongst collectors for many years, a cleaner copy of this performance from The Doors archives is given an official release on 2013's R-Evolution.
