Info:
The Rock Scene - Like It Is! is a one hour music special hosted by Noel Harrison and shot in color by CBC Television of Canada in 1967. Originally broadcast on October 16th, 1967, this episode featuring The Doors is the first in an experimental series of six planned for broadcast in 1967-1968, and the band helps kick off the premiere with a rare televised performance of The End. Although advertised as the O'Keefe Centre Presents, The Doors are in fact filmed at CBC's Studio 7 at 263 Mutual St. in Toronto. Other performers included in this inaugural episode of the series include the Jefferson Airplane, Dionne Warwick, Eric Anderson, and Sergio Mendez, with Don Thompson and his 25 piece orchestra providing musical direction for The Rock Scene. While other acts return to the studio to overdub their performances, The Doors do not, and the Oedipal section of The End is edited out for the original broadcast. At the present date, the original filmwork featuring the omitted Oedipal section of the performance has yet to be found and may no longer exist.
Press reporting from this time period reveals that the Jefferson Airplane are scheduled for filming at CBC's Studio 7 on August 7th, and The Doors on August 8th. In recent years, CBC staff photographs taken by Roy Martin in the studio during filming have given clear indications that a rehearsal or extended performance by The Doors takes place, suggesting that perhaps other songs were played or captured on tape. Newly discovered articles published in The Toronto Star document a taping of Light My Fire, and upon listening to a playback, Jim Morrison is displeased with what he hears. He tells the band members, "It's bad, bad, bad. Bruce, where are you?", referring to The Doors sound engineer Bruce Botnick. A second attempt to capture the band on tape commences with a performance of The End. As this performance was not a live broadcast, CBC has the opportunity to film multiple takes of The End or any other songs at their leisure, however the first-hand accounts of the filming indicate that The Doors give only one performance each of Light My Fire and The End.
In 1990, the original two-inch quad videotapes are transferred to a one-inch type 'C' videotape on a Sony D2 machine, and later given an official release on The Doors Soundstage Performances DVD in 2002. In 2014, the video re-appears as a bonus feature on The Doors Feast Of Friends Bluray/DVD. Newspaper reviews from 1967 have also indicated that an FM broadcast of the special is aired, however no known recordings or listings of a radio broadcast of The Rock Scene are currently known to exist.
