"On September 9, 1967 Robert Rowland and I went to the Village Theatre to see The Doors and The Vagrants. We went with Roger Mansor, the drummer of The Vagrants. We arrived early for Sound Check around 3pm. Bob and I sat on the Stage while The Vagrants equipment was being setup. Ray Manzarek and Jim Morrison of The Doors entered the theater and we see them walking toward the stage. Ray and Jim come over to where Bob and I are sitting and Ray introduces himself and Jim to Bob and I. Ray asks us if we could give them a hand. He explains that their roadies were sick and had to remain at the hotel. They asked Bob and I to be their Road Crew for a day. How could we say no! Bob and I went out to the truck and began unloading The Doors equipment. We dragged it inside and on to the stage where Jim and Ray helped us set it up. We helped them during their sound check and they asked if we could stick around for both shows. Well Yeah. So we were backstage when our friends The Vagrants went on for the first show. Bob and I were big fans of The Vagrants and thought this was another incredible adventure for us. During The Vagrants set, Leslie West, lights his guitar on fire. Only problem was, he was wearing a jacket of Eagle feathers which caught on fire. Leslie had no idea that he was on fire. I took off my jean jacket and ran on to the stage and while Leslie was playing his guitar solo, I was beating him with my jacket to extinguish the flames. I don't think Leslie knew what was happening but the fire was out and I left the stage. Many Many years later, I was sitting in a room with Leslie and Larry at Boodle's in Chester, NY and we talked about that show. Leslie had no idea that he was on fire but thanked me for putting him out.

The entire show was amazing and watching The Doors perform up close and personal was a real treat. Tommy James was backstage as well as Al Cooper & Steve Katz, and they told us about their new band Blood Sweat & Tears. In a few months, this venue would be purchased by Bill Graham and renamed The Fillmore East."
