In mid-1971 Australian journalist Lillian Roxon, author of Lillian Roxon's Encyclopedia Of Rock, produces a two minute newscast in New York profiling The Doors for her new daily radio show Diskotique. Spanning the band's career, this program is syndicated over hundreds of radio stations in the U.S., and copies of the broadcast have survived on vinyl pressings sent out to stations for airplay. The exact air date of this production is unknown, however in the final 30 seconds of the broadcast, Jim Morrison's current whereabouts in Paris with Pamela Courson are mentioned. This is the last known original radio profile of the band before Jim Morrison's death in July.

Following the death of Jim Morrison on July 3rd 1971, NPR in the United States syndicates a report on the death of Jim Morrison alongside many other media and news outlets around the world. Hosted by Mike Waters, this report appears on the radio show All Things Considered, and a portion of Jim Morrison's An American Prayer poem is read to the audience. The exact date of the original broadcast is unknown, however segments of the original programming that have been re-broadcast on anniversaries of Jim Morrison's passing indicate Jim Morrison passed away "last Saturday."

This four hour radio special first airs on October 5th, 1971 on KPFK Pacifica Radio in Los Angeles, and is produced, written, and directed by Clare Spark Loeb. Titled Jim Morrison: Artist In Hell, the special features interviews with Robby Krieger, Ray Manzarek, Paul Rothchild, and pertains to the life and death of Jim Morrison. Also reflecting on The Doors lead singer is Victor Wolfenstein of UCLA's philosophy department, and journalists Digby Diehl and Harvey Perr. These interviews with the band members are the earliest known recordings intended for public broadcast following the death of Jim Morrison, and are considered a breaking of their silence following the event. Bruce Gossard serves as technical producer for the special, and the program later receives a 1971 Armstrong Award in the education category. KPFK re-airs the special in two parts on May 24th and May 31st, 1972.
