The Doors kick off the final leg of their 1972 European tour in England with a performance on BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test, their third and last known European television performance for 1972. Following their concert in Amsterdam on May 7th, The Doors travel to London on May 8th and film their set later in the day. This BBC2 television program is shot in the Pres B Studio of the BBC Television Centre in London, airing on Tuesdays as the last show of the evening with host Richard Williams. The original broadcast takes place on May 9th, 1972 and also features a performance by Tom Paxton.

While original session footage consists of multiple takes of Ships With Sails, the song is not included in the final broadcast. Although a broadcast version of this episode has not turned up as of yet, a color timecoded copy of the original production footage has survived. Photographs from this performance taken by an unidentified photographer are known to collectors.
