PRODUCTION: BBC-1 TV

Info:

The Doors perform on European television for the first time with a live performance of Hello, I Love You on BBC's Top Of The Pops. At the time of this broadcast, Hello, I Love You is the #1 single in the United States, and is now rapidly climbing the charts in England. While this program is typically hosted by Jimmy Savile, it is occasionally hosted by BBC disc jockey Stuart Henry who fills in for Jimmy in this episode. Along with a broadcast on television, this program was simultaneously broadcast on the radio. Also performing on this episode are The Bee Gees, Canned Heat, Johnny Nash, Sandie Shaw, The Casuals, Amen Corner, and Aretha Franklin. Various photographers are also in the studio photographing the band. Jim Morrison is said to have been disappointed with this show and is reportedly in a bad mood during the production.

At the time of this performance, BBC is broadcasting the show in black and white, and the color screenshot provided above is only a photograph. A rehearsal for this performance takes place prior to the broadcast and may have been filmed as a screen test. Copies of the original television broadcast have never been found, and the BBC is on record stating that many of the Top Of The Pops episodes from this time period were trashed during an archival cleanout. While it's highly like that the televised performance footage has been lost forever, a recording of the radio broadcast has survived and is known to collectors.

"The Doors were rehearsing for 'Top Of The Pops', England's longest running music television show. Later on as they were miming to playback of 'Hello I Love You', I remember thinking that I would always regret not having the courage to ask Jim and the boys if I could shoot more pictures but Jim looked mean that day and I though it might have been uncool to ask.
